Surah An-Noor, Verse 31:
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze & protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) & not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent & to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (their bodies) & not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers……[List of mahrams] & all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.
These are a set of commands from Allah (swt) for the believing woman.
1. Lower her gaze (from all forbidden things): actions like; watching tv shows with half naked men & other indecent scenes, staring at (or pictures of) men, looking/ prying into other peoples affairs e.t.c we must shun away from all these.
2. Guard her private parts: I.e from all sorts illegal sexual actions. As He (swt) said in surat isra “And do not come near illegal sexual intercourse…[17:32]
3. Not to show off her adornments except that which is apparent: this includes our beautiful clothes/hijabs, made up faces & jeweleries, perfumed clothes, all these He (swt) says are only for our mahrams. The apparent include our face & hands, & our outer garment that serves as our covering. And also to draw our veils over our body parts such as the chest area, the body curves so as not to reaveal our shapes.
Allah concludes by saying “& beg for Allahs forgiveness” (I.e before this you were doing the wrong thing so ask for forgiveness & follow these commandments which you now know about) “if you want to be successful” (that is, if indeed you want to enter paradise).
What will then be our reasons on that day for not following His commands?
May Allah protect us from following our desires & help us to do the right thing always, ameen.
