26. AL-BASEER – The All Seer

26. AL-BASEER – The All Seer

This Name is a point of great reflection for all of us. Not only does He see everything without escape, but He also understands and has perfect insight on everything.

For all those who are struggling to leave behind those sins, that weakness, that laxness in Deen, and those habits that we carry out in secret, the biggest task is to internalize the meaning of al-Baseer. Do we honestly believe that He, Al-Baseer is witness to everything we do, in private and in open?

Perfect internalization of this Name will stop our inner conscience from betraying us into thinking ‘Just do it. Noone is watching you right now anyway.’ And when you are sure al-Baseer is watching, every time, all the time, wouldn’t you want to be at your best – whether the world sees you or not?

And secondly, al-Baseer is a great comfort to our hearts because:

(a) Nothing has pricked us, no harm or anxiety, or the slightest of struggles, but be sure that al-Baseer has understood you, recorded it and written your reward for it.

(b) No doer of injustice, no oppressor can escape al-Baseer, His Watchful Gaze and His Record of Deeds which is filling up with every evil act, every harm inflicted on the world in general, and His pious slaves, in particular. This gives the believer tremendous comfort and is a dire warning to the masters of evil in dunya.

So wait patiently for your Lord’s decree, for surely you are in Our Sight. [52: 48]

Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry thing but that it is [written] in a clear record. [6:59]

It is often that we are surrounded by those who want to talk, but how many actually want, desire and love to listen? Well, your Rabb and my Rabb waits to listen to YOU! Not only does He listen, His listening includes perfect comprehension and understanding of everything.

He listens to the whispers of the heart, the cry of the soul, the lament of the grieving, the anguish of the sick, and the muffled sounds of those persecuted and oppressed. He listens to every wayfarer, every layman, every one who calls upon Him, in happiness or distress. Then how do you feel lonely when As-Samee’ listens and understands you exclusively?

Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it). [50:18]

Moreover, He also knows well the secret counsels, the plotting, the unlawful talks, the guilty whisperings. When nothing is hidden from As-Samee’, how do we pretend to run away from Him, blind in our arrogance and ignorance?

It is the same to Him whether one of you conceals his speech or declares it openly; whether he lies hidden by night or walks forth freely by day. [13: 10]

As we edge closer to #Ramadan, know and love as-Samee’, and raise your dua’ to Him, for He surely answers your call!

One of the biggest mistakes we do is to think that honour and success can come from anything or anyone in this dunya. Whereas Allah ar-Raafi’ is the Owner of all Majesty and Honor. Those who follow Him are exalted and those who disobey Him are abased.

“Whoever desires honor – then to Allah belongs all honor. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it. But they who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and the plotting of those – it will perish.” (35:10)

Not only does He uplift whom He wills, He is also the Uplifter of you and me from our own nafs and desires. But those, in whose hearts is a disease, seek upliftment elsewhere.

“And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.” (63:8)

Of the ones He raises up the most are the ones who dedicate Himself to His Cause, acquire knowledge of His Deen and follow His guidance. Ar-Raafi’ says:

“Allah will exalt those of you who believe and those who are given knowledge to high ranks. And Allah is Aware of what you do.” (58:11)

The One Who constricts the sustenance for whoever He wills, out of His complete Wisdom. He is the One who seizes souls in sleep and at death, and wards off evil from His servants

Allah constricts rizq for whoever He wishes for reasons He knows best. However, we as Muslims have to refrain from uttering anything that is against the honor of Allah ‘azza wa jalla when that happens. At the same time, when He creates ease, we should acknowledge it is from Him and not because of us. But ya ikhwaani, the greatest constriction is the constriction of the heart and soul! May Allah open our hearts upon guidance and His love!

Allah ‘azza wa jalla warns us and says:

“As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): “My Lord has honoured me.” But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me!” (Surah Fajr: 15-16)

The One Who opens for His slaves closed worldly and religious matters. He is the Opener of hearts of the faithful to His Knowledge, and opens gates of forgiveness for those who repent.

When the journey ahead is full of uncertainty and doubt, it is al-Fattaah who alone has the Power to turn that doubt into confidence, that alluding matter into one of comfort, those troublesome thoughts into calmed feelings!

Asking Allah by this Name will change the way you look at your problems and confusions. For you will know that no matter is difficult for al-Fattaah to ease for you, no journey ahead is impossible for Him to guide you through, and no calamity can permanently trap you – because al-Fattaah will opens doors of guidance and sustenance from the darkest and most obscure of paths!

When you are worried about the guidance of your family or friends, that ‘one’ person you fear will never follow Haqq, ask al-Fattaah to open his or her heart to guidance and His Love!
